Camping in the Northwest - From a family who thought they'd share notes
Bay View State Park

Reservations through Washington State Parks.

Bay View State Park is a 25-acre camping park with 1,285 feet of saltwater shoreline on Padilla Bay. Over 11,000 acres of Padilla Bay are designated as National Estuarine Sanctuary.

Overall.
This is a unique, and wonderful park.  At first I wasn't sure if it would be ideal for us because of the setup: it's a big circle with a paved road and all the campsites are set up on the outside of the circle.  Then, in the middle there is a huge grassy area - where all the campers do their activities like bocce ball, frisbee etc.

Campsite.
The campsites at this park are definitely cramped - both by length and width.  We had our shorter 26' trailer at the time of our visit and that was even a bit tight (site 27).  So, for larger trailers like we have now, there are only a handful of sites that can fit a 30'+ trailer (we noted possible 20, 21, 22 or 24).  Also, because of how the park is set up, you can't avoid driving onto the center circle of grass while backing your trailer into the site.

We walked through the "tent" and small camper area and that seemed like it had nice spots, tucked back in with some privacy.

Other Accommodations..
  • There are 6 super cute cabins right on the edge of the campground facing Padilla Bay.

Beach.
There is a paved walking path down to the beach, which is pretty nice.  It is a rocky beach with lots of sea weed when the tide is out -- we wouldn't swim there.  Great beach for throwing rocks, and could definitely walk for quite a ways.

At Sunset, people gather to watch the sun go down behind Anacortes.

Play Area.
As mentioned above, the big oval circle of grass in the middle is actually kind of fun, especially to look out and see all the activity of the other campers.  One night while we were there, a big group had set up a big screen and set up a mini movie theatre out on the grass.

Bikes or No Bikes?
Definitely bikes -- especially for young ones.  They could ride around and around that circle of grass on the pavement until they got dizzy!

Vicinity.
The little unique beach town of LaConner is only 16 miles away.  Nearby on Highway 20 offers the LaConner FarmHouse restaurant and a small Shell Station for basic needs.
